The very first Scotland national rugby union team can be traced back to the 1870s, despite the sport first appearing in the country back in the 1850s. This was when the first official international game was played against England – now a fierce rival – at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh, in which the Scots came out on top, winning in front of a crowd of around 4,000 spectators.
In the many years between this first victory and the present, the Scotland rugby team today now holds a number of titles and famous wins to its name. This includes various tophies within the Six Nations Championships, including the Calcutta Cup in which Scotland is the current holder. However, the Scots have yet to win the Six Nations outright, its 15 titles, 10 Triple Crowns and three Grand Slams in this competition’s history have only come in its previous formats. The most recent Five Nations win was back in 1999.
The Scotland Rugby team have seen greater success in the Rugby World Cup. Since its inaugural competition in 1987, Scotland have featured in all competitions since this time earning their best finish fourth place in 1991 and making the quarter finals in all but two tournaments.
