Alex Callender currently plays as a flanker for the Wales women’s rugby union team and the Worcester Warriors. She gained her first cap for Wales in 2019, when she competed in the Women’s Six Nations.
Born on 29 July 2000 in Carmarthen, Wales, it wasn’t until 2017 that Alex Callender first began to play rugby. And even then, she only started because some of her school friends invited her down to a training session at her local club.
Although Callender is now known for her rugby talent, she was also a skillful netball player. In fact, she competed at county level and was selected for the Wales U21s team. However, she found it difficult to train for both sports and ultimately decided to pursue rugby.
After switching to rugby, Callender decided to try out for the Scarlets U18s side. She was accepted onto the team, competed at regionals and was quickly signed by the Wales Sevens team. She was soon called up by the Wales 15s side and went on to compete at the Six Nations in 2019. Additionally, she also joined the Worcester Warriors in 2019.
By 2022, Alex Callender was named in the Wales squad for the delayed 2021 Rugby World Cup – Wales finished in eighth place. She also showcased her skills in the 2022 Six Nations. Although Wales came in third, Callender played in every game and was named Player of the Match during their final match against Italy.
As one of Wales’ up and coming players, we’ll be tuning in to see how Alex Callender’s career unfolds.
The six teams have been named ahead of the first round of WXV 1 in Wellington. All matches will be played at Sky Stadium, kicking off with England vs Australia on Friday 20th October. On Saturday 21st October Canada will face Wales before home side New Zealand take on France in a RWC2021 semi-final rematch.
Both Wales and Scotland recorded wins over the USA and Spain respectively ahead of the inaugural WXV competition which starts on 13th October.
