Sarah Bern started her rugby career in the back row but now plays as a prop. Known for her powerful running skills, she made her debut appearance for England in 2016 and currently represents Bristol Bears Women.
Born on 10 July 1997, Bern first played rugby when she was 11 years old. Although she chose to pursue rugby, Bern is a self-confessed lover of sports and has also competed in netball, basketball, football, cricket and athletics.
Bern earned her stripes with the England U20s team and was signed to the senior team in 2016. As the youngest member of the senior squad at the time, she was successful from the off and competed against France and the USA during the 2016 Women’s Rugby Series.
In 2017, she was selected for the World Cup squad and played in four of the team’s five matches. Her accomplishments included scoring a try during the semi-finals, helping England to secure their victory over France. She was also voted Player of the Match.
Two years later in 2019, Bern contested the Six Nations and won the Grand Slam. Her play was crucial to the team’s success as she started in each game and scored five tries during the tournament. As a result, she was named as England Women’s Player of the Year in 2019. Following this, Bern also played a major role in England’s progress towards the final of the 2021 Rugby World Cup.
A dynamo on the field, Bern has also been shortlisted for several other awards. This includes World Rugby’s Women’s Player of the Year in 2019 and TikTok Women’s Six Nations Player of the Championship in 2022.
