Fast-forward to 1954 and the Grenoble Rugby team contested one of the most famous matches in the club’s history. The team won the national championship after beating U.S. Cognac and, in doing so, they became the champions of France.
This is the only time in the Grenoble Rugby side’s history that they’ve been crowned as the French champions. However, the team should have won the title in 1993, but they were denied by a series of refereeing errors that handed the title to Castres. 13 years later, the referee admitted his mistakes from the game, but the 14-11 victory still stands.
Since the disputed title of 1993, the Grenoble Rugby team have struggled for prominence and they’ve bounced between the first and second divisions of French rugby. However, the team have still experienced some glorious moments. For example, they participated in the European Rugby Champions Cup (then the Heineken Cup) for the first time in 2000 and were the only team in the competition to beat Northampton, who were the tournament’s eventual champions.
However, in 2005, the Grenoble Rugby team were relegated to the amateur Fédérale 1 after financial problems were discovered. But, since then, the team have recovered well. They bounced back to the professional ranks of the Pro D2 at the first attempt and they were promoted from the Pro D2 in 2012. Since then, the side have yo-yoed between the Pro D2 and the Top 14.
