Phil Waugh is a former openside flanker who represented the New South Wales Waratahs and the Wallabies. In 2003, when Australia lost in the final of the Rugby World Cup, he won the John Eales medal.
Born 22 September 1979, Phil Waugh started playing rugby at the Shore school. In his final three years with the school, he played for the first XV. He also captained the side in 1997.
Due to his obvious talent, Phil Waugh was first called up to represent Australia Schoolboys in 1996. He then went on to captain the side in 1997. Following a successful stint with the Schoolboys team, he represented Australia at U19 and U21 level.
Phil Waugh’s professional career began in 1999, when he made his first appearance for the New South Wales Waratahs. He then went on to represent the side for the entirety of his domestic career. Between 1999 and 2011, he made 136 appearances for the Waratahs and was voted as the team’s best forward three times. He also won the Players’ Player of the Year award in 2004.
Although he enjoyed a stellar career with the Waratahs, Phil Waugh is undoubtedly best known for his time with the Australian national team. Between 2000 and 2009, he made 79 appearances for the Wallabies, including a stint as the side’s captain. He was also a member of the Wallabies side that reached the final of the 2003 Rugby World Cup. That year, he scooped the coveted John Eales medal.
Since retiring from rugby in 2011, Phil Waugh has moved into the corporate world. He now works in finance.
